When I started my first restaurant fresh out of college back in 1980, I had a hole in the wall Chinese take-e-outee joint in the local mall. I had almost $100,000 in debts (hey, it seemed like a lot back then when I just 20 years old) while living at home with my Mom.

There weren’t any “Restaurant Gurus” around then like there is today…and I learned how to succeed with NO money by trial and error. That little take-e-outee joint eventually grew into a mini restaurant empire of four restaurants throwing off, how should I say it, some pretty decent cash flow. So, I was living the good life then, wasn’t I?

Well, yes and no. Yes, because the money was good, but no, because, I was spending every waking hour in my restaurants. I’d start the day off at mid morning at one of the places working lunch, then to any of the four places, sometimes all, for dinner and then ending the day at my bar concept where I would usually do the closing duties, leaving at, oh, about 3:30 am or so. A little crazy huh? But, this was the way I was raised. My parents were first generation immigrants who make their living by working early morning till late night, every day for year upon year, so that was bred into me. It was programmed in to me that I could not work less and expect to succeed.

Which reminds me of the old joke, about the government official coming down on the small business owner. He says: “We’ve received a report that you have some poor fella working here 18 hours a day, 7 days a week, for nothing but room and board, all the tobacca he can smoke and all the liquor he can drink. What do you say about that, boy?” “Yes, it is,” admits the owner. “And, I’m afraid to say, you’re looking at him.”

So, what saved me from my self created and self imposed insanity? Well, frankly, on a personal note, as I had promised my Mom long ago that she would never have to live in a nursing home, my ninety one year old Mother came to live with my wife and I about nine years ago. And, for the last three years of her life, she was bed ridden. In addition to Mom, my wife and I started our family with our first daughter. Well, suddenly, I had to reevaluate my priorities. My full time “job”, well, not job, as it was an honor, to spend the time taking care of my mother in her last years. And, in being around to raise my children.

My mini restaurant “empire” became my part time job. I had to reevaluate all of the things that I was doing. I had to determine what the most important things were for me to do. Because, frankly, I could only spend a couple of hours a day “in” the restaurants. I eliminated needless time wasters. I automated important but repetitive tasks. I delegated to a staff that I had to learn to train much better. I systemized everything that I could so that I could take myself out of the way so that the restaurants could run without my “indispensable” presence. In fact, I only did what I felt was the absolute essentials that only I could do.

The result? I spent much less time at the restaurants. I made and kept more money. The restaurants are no longer “my life”. I enjoyed the last years of my mother’s life with us which is genuinely irreplaceable. And, as Mom has now moved on, I haven’t gone back to the old ways. I follow other passions in addition to the restaurant, my martial arts and joy of learning languages. I spend many, many hours with my wife and children everyday. It is absolutely great!

After all these years in the restaurant business and systematically learning how to produce a paradigm shift in how I run my restaurant, I am ready to teach others how they could do the same. Books and Information Products Are Great Learning Tools,
But One-On-One Coaching Will Take You to The Next Step

I highly recommend you getting your hands on as many good training and information products as you can. In fact, I did calculations on my education expenses and I’ve easily spent over $100,000 throughout the years of my restaurant career on books, CDs, DVDs, and seminars.
There are many books, training courses, and seminars which can help you in your business. But they’re no replacement for a coach and mentor who works with you on your business personally.

You need business advice and help that applies to your situation and niche. You don’t just want one-size-fits-all marketing tools and plans. You want something designed especially for you…and you want someone you can ask questions of and personally talk to about improving your business results.

My only caution to you in this area is you make sure you deal with a business coach who has succeeded themselves first in the independent restaurant business.

Why would I bring this up? It’s for one very good reason. There are a large number of coaching programs now being sold by “gurus” where the guru has never had a successful restaurant themselves. They’ve been in the “biz” as a server or perhaps even working for a “corporate” restaurant in some capacity. And/or they just paid to go to a five day business coaching seminar or training program and now they’re instantly business coaches (with server experience) qualified to help you do something you’ve already been doing for years.

When you join my coaching program, you contact me personally. You won’t deal with some apprentice coach and you won’t be dealing with someone “practicing” their business skills on you. You’ll have access to me and you’ll be given proven systems of success for your business.

You Have Two Options Of One-On-One Coaching/Mentoring With Me

You have two possible options to help you improve your business:

Option A: Onsite Visit Plus Coaching.  This option includes my lodging, airfare, and Day One “anonymous” observation of your restaurant and market.  Day Two would be spent analyzing your current site impact, food, service, and management processes, and promotions.  Day Three we will review my analyses to see what you are doing that works well, look at how processes can be improved, and types of promotions that will be most effective for you to implement.

In addition, monthly coaching which consists of one hour phone discussion every two weeks and unlimited contact via email. This would start the 2nd month...after we've done the site visit and implemented the onsite elements.

$3,500 upfront for the site visit and then $800 a month for the coaching follow-up.  You may cancel the coaching component at any time on this plan.

Option B: Coaching Only.  We would have a one hour phone discussion every two weeks and unlimited contact via email. In this case, you or one or several of the people will have to do more of the footwork, analysis, etc…to be my “eyes” as I would not be on site. But it is cost effective, and provides you a coach who will keep you and your people on schedule and accountable as well as provide expertise and advice. I would plan on a minimum three month commitment for maximum impact, but you can cancel at any time after the 3 month period.

While the site visit will provide you with immediate feedback on my personal observations, the monthly coaching format has advantages in that you will be doing your own tracking and analysis of your processes and promotions. This will allow you to gauge their effectiveness over time with real data, not just a sense that this or that worked by looking at your cash flow.  You can compile your questions as you do your analysis and maximize the benefit of the phone discussions and emails.  You will find that using tracking data and having continuous access to my responses to your observations and ideas will enable you to become an objective judge of the promotions that will not just make your restaurant more financially stable, but make your restaurants stand out in your market on a continuous basis.

“Coaching via Phone and Email PLUS” includes the quick email response PLUS two direct phone coaching sessions with me each month. I usually schedule these at two week intervals to give you time to assimilate/implement information from one session to the next.

At your pleasure, you may use these calls to maximize your business potential. If you choose, you may record the calls to review at your leisure or use a part of your business. .

No Long-Term Contracts or Commitments Required

This program is not for everyone. I state my prices up front because I don’t believe you should have to call me for basic information and then be subjected to hard sell tactics to try something that is not what you really need for your business.

Many classes and business seminars run from $1,000 – $5,000 for sessions are in conference style with no personal interaction or follow up. You go home with a binder of information you may or may not use. You have spent money on airfare, hotel stays, and food. You have learned a little, and probably found that in order to really benefit, you have to buy more products or services on top of your expenses for the time you spent.

Some on the products or continuing teleconferences/video conferences or podcast sessions may cost more than the price of my one-on-one coaching options.

You can cancel your membership in this program at any time. You’re in control of this. Since I’m billing through PayPal (you can pay through your PayPal account, any major credit card, or online check), you just login to your account and cancel anytime you want.

I recommend you plan for at least several months of coaching when you sign-up, because success is rarely instant online. It takes some time and commitment. Only in this coaching program, you’re the one in control of the commitment….not me!

I’ve seen those coaching programs that require you to pay $10,000 or more upfront. Who are they kidding? It’s not for your benefit. It’s for theirs because most of their clients wouldn’t keep paying them once they realized the expert wasn’t the one doing the coaching.

In this program, you’re in control. If I don’t prove you the advice you need to dramatically increase profits, you can cancel at anytime.

But as I said, this program isn’t for everyone. This program is for highly motivated people who want to see business growth and take their lives back. You want the financial freedom and lifestyle that comes from having a successful business which has been systematized.
